Ever since I could remember, my mother had always made green bean casserole for dinner whenever we had chicken or turkey. This pairing of the great green bean flavor with gravy and French style onions on top always sat well with lemon chicken or Thanksgiving turkey. My mother always said that it was one of the easiest dishes to prepare, and believe me, it’s not! At least if you want it to come out nicely, you really have to take a lot of preparation and make sure that you do everything right.
You need a casserole dish that is appropriate for your green bean casserole. Once you have that ready you can cut some onions into thin rings while your green beans are boiling. After the onions are cut up, you soak them in milk or soy milk for about an hour to have them get extra juicy. Prepare a pan with oil to fry your onions once you coat them with flour. Fry your onions until they are crispy and golden and set them on some paper towels to drain. Get your gravy and make it while you get the green beans in the casserole dish. Once the gravy is complete pour it onto the green beans and coat the top of the casserole with your onions. You are not done yet! You still need to bake the casserole for about 15-20 minutes to get a great flavor infusion!
